Hoop The Loop

All Shades of Pink held its second Hoop the Loop fundraiser on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Glenn Dale Curves in Lanham, MD.  It was a great spring day and 30 registrants participated.

Board Member and Event Coordinator Robin Brown did a wonderful job in rallying troops to sponsor hoopers and come out and encourage the partici-pants. Hoopers young, mature and in-between had a great time demonstrating their stamina to keep the hula hoop going as long as possible.  Some veteran hula hoopers were able to last well beyond an hour, and several beyond 2 hours, but the winnder of the day was seventeen year-old Candace Joseph who hooped for 128 minutes, thirty-eight minutes beyond last year's winner.

Curves Member and survivor Nancy Smith took her hooping to the streets and gained permission from the Greenbelt K-Mart to hoop in front of the store. Accompanied by a few other hoopers they shared the ASOP mission with K-Mart shoopers and were encouraged by the WHUR radio crew.  Several of the shoppers even tried hooping as well as several WHUR crew.

Over $1,600 was raised in this year's effort. which will allow ASOP to provide yarn to our senior volunteers who are retired and on fixed incomes. Volunteers now produce 40 to 45 blankets each month.

TIPS FOR HOOPING

ANYONE can do it.  Ten minutes a day can actually melt inches.

Beginners: 1st Week.
Hoop for 3 minutes, rest 1 minute, hoop 3 minutes, rest 1 minute, hoop 3 more minutes.

2nd Week.  Try to cut out 1 rest time.  Goal is to hoop for 10 minutes straight.

3rd Week.  Try hooping with arms in the air for 3 minutes.  Keep hoop on upper mid section for 3 minutes.  Keep hoop on hips for 3 minutes.  Goal is to keep the hoop where you need it most.

Try playing music as you hoop and watch the inches melt away!
