All Shades of Pink

Helping Families Fight Breast Cancer

COMFORT BLANKET PROGRAM

 ASOP Comfort Blanket Program

In 2008 All Shades of Pink partnered with Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, Maryland (Prince George's County) where we provide comfort blankets to their breast cancer patients directly after surgery.  Since that time we have partnered with Providence Hospital (Washington, DC) and Washington Adventist Hospital (Montgomery County).  These blankets are provided free of charge to the patient as a symbol and reminder of ASOP’s unity with them during their fight with breast cancer.  The blankets are meant to be:

  • a healing balm in times of pain;
  • a soothing comfort in times of distress, and
  • a gentle embrace in times of loneliness.

Each blanket is hand-made and fashioned by a volunteer of the organization. Every blanket is as unique as the person who creates it.

Crochet groups will meet once a month at various locations to work on and collect finished blankets.  Teachers will be on hand to assist those who would like to learn to make our special blankets.  Once the blankets are completed, a custom All Shades of Pink tag is sewn on the blanket and then delivered to our partner hospitals for distribution to breast cancer patients as needed.  To maintain consistency in our giving, we ask that all donated blankets be made in a giant granny square according to our pattern found on this website. Click here to view our approved pattern for our Comfort  Blankets.

If you are working on a blanket for ASOP or would like to learn how to start making a blanket for our Blanket Comfort Program, please join us on the third Saturday of each month at the Atlanta Bread Company store in Greenblet, Maryland. We ask that any one donating a blanket please take the time to complete the Volunteer Form and send back to us via email, fax or mail, if you have not already done so.

A STRANGER'S GIFT
(by Jean Estry)

I received a gift,
from a stranger today.
This act of kindness
In my heart will stay.

This blanket was made
By hands you can see.
All the time it took them,
They gave to a stranger like me.

How can I thank them?
How will they know?
The comfort and warmth,
I felt in body and soul.

These angels are sent,
From God up above.
And in "All Shades of Pink,"
Is their gift of love.
